Dakota- The Stereophonics
This is my third and final Artefact and this is a studio project I did in my first year of college and I'm going to be going through everything I did for this project.
Planning
For this first part of my Artefact I'm going to be going through my planning stage of this Artefact going through the recording plan, research on the song, mic techniques and mic chooses for the mic and the last thing will be studio times for recording the song.
Planning Recording
For this part of my planning section, this is where I will plan out everything I will need to do for our project like the instruments we will be using and equipment used as well.
Research on Song
For this part of the planning I will be going through and talking about the research that I did for the song
This is where I go through some research on the song like what the genre is, what the BPM is on the song and see if I will need a guide track for the project as well.
Mic Techniques/ Choice for instruments
For this part I will be going through and talking about all the mic techniques I used for all of the instruments I used, drums, rhythm, lead, bass, accoustic and percustion
Drum Kit was recorded using an Audix kit- Kick- Mic in Drum hole, Snare- Use a Clip to clip on the side of snare drum, HI Hat- Use Mic Stand, Overheads- Mic Stands
Bass- D.I box
Rhythm/Lead- Miked AMP
Acoustic- 2 Audix F9 pencil mics facing head and tail of guitar.
Vocals- Mic Stand with a SM57 as the mic
Studio Times
In this section of my Artefact I will be going through the times I planed for recording the song
I will be using the studios on Thursdays which is our studio days in college. The first thing me and my group will be recording it the drums and they will be recorded on 13/02/2025. Once the drums are recorded we will be moving onto the guitars first will be the bass that will be recorded on 13/02/2025 then the Rhythm in the afternoon of the same day, then the acoustic will be recorded on 20/02/2025 then the lead in the afternoon. For the vocals they will be recorded 27/02/2025.
Recording
For this part of my website I will be going through that parts of the recording for the project.
Drums
First up for recording is the drums. Before Stephen plays the drums we need to set them up first while I do that Tez will set up the desk so that the channels are there for all the drum parts. Once everything is set up we start recording then after the recording of the drums are finished we take all the mics and cables down for the next instrument which would be the guitar.
Bass
Next up is the bass guitar and that will be recorded in the recording room as its just the D.I that we will be using to record it. so that will be set up by Tez while Tez does that I will be getting the tracks set up ready to go and record in the session. Once we get everything set up and ready to get recorded then we start Jack will be playing the bass for us. Once the bass guitar are done with recording we mute the channel and mic down the D.I and guitar.
Rhythm and lead
For recording both the rhythm and lead, we will be recording the rhythm first, me and Tez will set up the desk while Andreas gets the Rhythm set up to his liking. Once everything is set up and ready to go we start recording then once the rhythm is done
Vocals
Next up will be the vocals we record, Tez will set up the mic for her singing and get all the equipment she needs while she does that I will set up the desk for the mics getting signals into the desk and get the levels right by getting Tez to talk into the mic so I can fix the gain. Once thats done we start recording and get that done and after that is finished we will take down the mics for the end of the day.
Final Listen
Once we get all the instruments recorded we listen to the song and see if we like it. And need to change anything like levels that needs changing.
Mixing
For this part of this artefact I will be going through my mixing stage of my project, going through everything i went through to get my final mix.
Drums
The first thing that we will be mixing will be the drums, I will listen over the drums and add the effects that need to get added for example reverb and E.Q. But the drums where sounding good so didn't need to add much. I added compressor to all the elements kick snare hi hats and overheads. I then added reverb to the snare to boost the snare sound.
Bass
The next thing I mixed was the bass guitar, first I listened through the song with the bass guitar soloed then said to my self what can make it sound better so I added chorus to it so it give it more depth, movement and a wider stereo image, I also added compressor to the bass as well so I could even out the dynamic range.
Lead
After I am finished with the bass and was happy with how it sounds I moved onto the lead, for the lead guitar I listened through the song with the lead soloed and then after that I decided to add a classical compressor to it as its good for evening out the volume, increasing sustain for long ringing notes in the guitar and so that it is heard over the heavy guitars in the mix as well.
Vocals
For the vocals which will be the final thing I mixed I listened through the song with just the vocals coming through and once that is done I added the effects hat I needed to add starting off with genetic compressor as it adds dynamic range to the vocals and it also balances them out as well, between the loud and quiet sounds. I also added delay to the vocals to just boost them a little bit. I also added auto shift to the vocals as well so that it keeps the vocals in tune and fixes major pitch changes if needed. I also added an EQ to the vocals as well called Airy vocal as it cleans up problem frequencies and shapes the tone up a little.
Photos of drums and Mics
This is where I'm going to show you the mics we used for the drums
Screen Shots of Mix
For this part of my artefact I will be showing you the screen shots I took of my mix
Drums
Kick- The first effect I put on my kick was a compressor and I put a pre set of kick tight to tighten the kick sound as that makes it sound better. The next effect I added to the kick was an EQ and there was a pre set I could put on again called Vintage kick so that is an allocated EQ for kicks. The third and final effect I added to the kick was a duplicate of the compressor.
Snare- A effect I added to the snare was a fab-filter and just put the factory default on it, I added fab filter as it controls the problems with the frequencies and adds a punch to the snare.
Hi-Hats- An effect I added to the hi hats was a compressor/limiter and put a pre set called gentle limiting as I wanted just a little bit of a limiter on the hi hat.
Over Heads - For the overheads the first effect I added was an EQ called channel strip as it helps control harsh cymbal frequencies and removes unwanted low-end rumble. the other effect I added was another EQ called EQ-band for the same reason.
