Artefact 1- Au Pays Du Cocaine- Geese

This is information about my first artefact Au Pays Du Cocaine - Geese

Planning

First of all for the planning part of the project, we where put in groups of 4 people and we plan out how we are going to use the studio and plan out the times in the studio as well. Me and my group had to decide what song we wanted to record and we all decided on Au Pays Du Cocaine as we liked the song and thought it would be great to record. once we got our song choice we had to do some research on the song, for example check what the BPM of the song is, what genre the song is from.

Also see what instruments are used in the song , there will also be different mic techniques for different instruments, for the guitars it's stereo mics with one mic facing the head of the guitar and the other one facing the tail of the guitar.  For the kick drum there was a mic in the kick drum hole with a mic stand holding it in place. for the snare mic there was a mic clipped onto the side of the snare drum and for the hi-hats and overheads they were both with mics on mic stands as well.

For the choice of mics there are different mics for different instruments, so for the drums the mics would be dynamic mics and for the guitar and vocal the mics would be condenser.

We also had to plan out the time needed in the studios, we have studios free on Wednesdays in college. We will get drums done first by Archie on 14/01/2026, Acoustic guitar will be done by Jack on 21/01/2026 Vocals will be done by James on 28/01/2026 backing vocals will be done by Jack on 28/01/2026 or 04/02/2026 .

Recording

Drums

The drums will be played by Archie as he is the best drummer in the class. First, someone in the group will help Archie set up the drums with all the cables and mics we will need to record the drums while 2 people do this the other people will be setting up the desk and the channels for the mics. Then we will record the drums then once the drums are recorded we will put all the mics down and all the cables away for recording the next instrument. the Daw we will be using is Pro Tools and we recorded in SSL2. the recording method we will be using is recording man. the mics we will use is the Audix Kit.

Bass Guitar

The Bass will be played by jack and Yet again Jack will be setting up the guitar and set it up on how he finds it comfy to play with and still get a good signal. We will be Recording the guitars until they are at good standard for the song then once that happens we will take the mics down and the cables away then move onto the next instrument. the recording method we will be using in the x/y axis for the guitars and the mics we will be using are the LCT 040's

Vocals and Backing Vocals

For the Vocals we where going to be doing Jack and James but in the end we just went with Jack for the Vocals and Backing Vocals. Jack will set up the mic for the vocals when Jack is doing that the rest of us will be setting up the tracks for vocals and backing vocals and where the signal is going to into the desk. We will get the vocals done then Jack will get the backing vocals after finished with the main vocals. He might need to do main vocals one week then the backing vocals another week.

Mixing

First of all I start with the drums by adding different effects to them to make them sound as best as possible for example reverb and EQ will be added to the drums in the mix. I added reverb as it brings up the low, lifeless sounds and makes them significantly bigger and more musical. then I added EQ as it helps them cut through a mix, fixes nuddy or harsh frequencies and sculpts the overall tone of the drums.

Once we get the drums done with how I want it to sound I will move onto the acoustic guitar its going to be the same as the drums make the acoustic sound as good as possible while adding some of the same effects to it being reverb and EQ. I added EQ to the bass as it helps it by making it punchy and cuts out the muddy parts of the bass, and it blends more nicely in the mix with the drums for example.

Then we move onto the Vocals, the first effects I added to the vocals was EQ to balance their vocal out and cut out some of the high end and to help it sit cleanly in the mix. after the EQ is sorted we then added compression to the vocals as well so I can balance out the high end and low end of the vocals bringing the highs down.

Then lastly I do a final mix, once we get all the tracks done we will do the final mix and get all the tracks sorted and get a good level so nothing is too loud or too quiet. And add effects and everything we need to add to make it sound better.

Submission

Final Listen

Before I submit the song I will give it a final listen and see if I like how its mixed and the level is nicely balanced and see if there's anything that needs edited and changed or if I need to change the level balance or not.

Submission

Once I have finished mixing the track I will submit it before the final deadline then I will look over my work and my progress.

Drums

Kick- An effect I put on the kick was a fab filter as it adds control to the kick cuts out some of the background sounds.

Snare- For the snare I added a EQ to is as well called kill-EQ, I added an EQ to the snare so it cuts through the arrangement and clears out muddy frequencies and balances the tone.

Hi Hat- For the hi hat I also added a fab filter as it cuts out the harsh sounds and clears out muddy low-end rumble.

Bass

For the Bass the first effect I added was a LFO I added LFO as it modulates parameters like cut-off filter, pitch or volume over time. I also added an amp filter to the bass as well so I could get the sound I was looking for
